Option III: Manual Therapy Advanced Skills Course Series
2 sessions to choose from:
Winter Session: January-April
Fall Session: September-December
A program for busy professionals
Join us on the weekends. Participate in the 3-month Mentorship, minus the clinical work, clinical supervision and tutorials. Take our Manual Therapy Advanced Skills Course Series and learn from the most experienced residency faculty in the country. This program is designed for the busy professional who doesn't have time for a full-time residency.
The Courses
- The Manual Therapy Advanced Skills Course begins with a one-week intensive.
- This is followed by five weekend sessions, which include 2-3 Mondays
- The course will be offered twice a year and each spans a three-month period. The course work will total 108 hours.
Take the Manual Therapy Advanced Skills course if you want to:
- Learn an efficient, systematic clinical reasoning process that emphasizes manual therapy examination and treatment of the spine, shoulder and knee complexes.
- Improve your differential diagnosis skills.
- Expand your repertoire of treatment options, in combination with exercise and self-management approaches.
- Become skilled in the Australian approach (Maitland Concept). You'll also learn exercise, functional training and self-mobilization interventions as part of total patient management.

How are these courses different from other long-term courses?

- encouragement to read current literature recommended by the faculty before and during the courses. You will also be asked to complete selected clinical projects in order to strengthen your clinical reasoning skills. Your commitment in time and effort will be returned by faculty many times over.
Entry Requirements
- Must be licensed to practice PT in the State of California, and have had at least one year of PT practice.
- Must be currently practicing a minimum of 50% time in an outpatient orthopedic PT setting. Entry into the program is competitive.
Course Requirements
- Attend all sessions of the course series.
- Practice examination, treatment and clinical reasoning schema between classes.
- Complete clinical projects and ongoing readings of orthopedic literature.
- Graduates will receive a certificate of completion from Kaiser Hayward. Contact the program director for additional requirements if you wish to achieve a Manual Therapy Certification Level I.

Session I: (Winter) January-April of each year
Session II: (Fall) September-December of each year

Application Deadlines
October 1st deadline for the Session I (Winter) January-April course series in the next year.
May 1st deadline for admission into the Session II (Fall) September-December course series of the same year
Application Procedures
- Submit resume with listing of all undergraduate, graduate and continuing education course work with hours/dates of courses
- Prepare a one-page statement describing why you are interested in taking the manual therapy advanced skills course series.
- Application must be postmarked by deadline.
Late Application
If you missed the application deadline, contact us to determine whether there are openings in the class due to cancellations.
Tuition
- $1800 for community PTs
- $1650 for Kaiser PTs
- For 108 hours of course work, tuition is equivalent to a weekend course of only $250
Scholarships
- Selected scholarships are available for Kaiser employees and community physical therapists. Contact program director directly for further information.
- Submit the following scholarship application materials:
- Scholarship application form Make linkage to form – same one as for the Mentorship and Fellowship scholarships.
- Send pages 1-2 of your most recent Federal Tax Form 1040. If you were not required to submit a form 1040, please include an explanation in your personal statement.
- Personal statement describing why you are applying for financial assistance. Please include information about the following, if applicable:
- Are you currently paying student loans? If yes, specify monthly amount?
- Will you have any other sources of income during the program (e.g. parents, working spouse, your own part-time employment?)
- Are you the caretaker of any individuals other than those family members listed in your tax return? Describe.
- Scholarship application materials must accompany application for admission.

Individuals who successfully complete the Manual Therapy Advanced Skills I are eligible to apply for the Manual Therapy Advanced Skills II course series which includes some of our best course work on peripheral joint examination and treatment, and advanced course work on neurodynamics and the pain sciences from the 6-month Fellowship.
Graduates of the Manual Therapy Advanced Skills II receive a certificate of completion. Individuals who complete additional
requirements and examination may achieve a Manual Therapy Certification Level II.
