Being a member of the Kaiser Fellowship Residency
Program has kept my passion for physical therapy fueled
in a way that I could never have imagined. But I must
admit that work is not my first passion!
Every winter, our program director, Carol Jo, has to
deal with my “winter schedule”, meaning that I live
part-time on Donner Summit in the Tahoe area (remember
the saga of the Donner Party?). I love to ski, mainly
cross country track skiing. Plus, Tahoe has an extensive
race schedule from January through March. When the
racing is over, it’s time to go randonee skiing, and the
Selkirk range in the Canadian Rockies is the place to
find late season powder.
But I do have to come back down (literally because
Donner Summit is at 7000’) and get back to clinical
supervision and teaching, usually in April. If you
aren’t familiar with the Bay Area, that is the best time
to start cycling or running or sculling. And to keep
those competitive spirits happy, there is a full
schedule of triathlons, running races or rowing regattas
that I could recommend if you need a goal in addition to
your goal of becoming a better manual therapist. You
will likely be busier than you imagined studying and
practicing, but a bit of physical activity will keep you
balanced. Life after all does go on, even with the
commitment you make when you decide to join the program.
Physical therapy is still a top 10 passion for me after
20+ years of clinical practice. I gain not only
knowledge and clinical expertise from this program, but
am surrounded by a community of peers that support and
inspire me, both in my personal and professional life.
